Germany has just taken a big step for the world of cannabis in Europe! With more than 400 votes in favor, the Bundestag has said yes to self-cultivation and the distribution of cannabis flowers through social clubs. But wait, there’s more…!

After months of debates and discussions between experts and the government, Germany has given the go-ahead to complete cannabis regulation. At last! On an exciting afternoon, the Bundestag gave its approval with a majority that makes one wonder if there will be those who do not want a piece of the cake…

The brain behind this advance is Karl Lauterbach, the Minister of Health, and his project not only gives the green light to the self-cultivation of up to three plants, but also opens the doors to all imaginable uses of the plant. And when? Starting April 1st!

Among the points that make up this legalization is the possession of up to 25 grams of flower in public places. Finally you can walk around with the snitch in your pocket without fear! And let’s prepare for the opening of multiple non-profit associations that will be able to distribute products from the plant (albeit with a limit of 10% THC) or sell seeds or cuttings to their members. And what else? Well, the law is going to remove cannabis from the list of prohibited substances. Doctors will be able to prescribe without hindrance from now on!

Karl Lauterbach stated that the current situation is not acceptable, especially with this “worrying criminal black market.” So they decided to confront it in style, by removing the weed from illegality!

But be careful! Not everything is so easy. Although 407 deputies voted yes, another 226 said “no, thank you” and 4 abstained. Now we have to wait for the Federal Council to give final approval on March 22. Although its approval is not necessary, opposition to the law could weaponize it and delay the process considerably.

Expectations are high and, according to Lauterbach, Germany is preparing to boast the happiest economy in Europe with its own legal cannabis market. And that’s not all: The European spring could catch this green fever…

Germans have been debating this law since last year and are now closer than ever to making it a reality. With politicians, health experts and cannabis activists working together, even receiving advice from the Spanish masters of the Confederation of Federations of Cannabis Associations (ConFAC). Let’s hope that the rest of Europe catches this good vibe and joins the legal cannabis club! It’s time to stop hanging around and join the green party!

Faced with the inevitability of the future lack of resources and alternatives, experts agree in promoting the implementation of the regenerative agriculture, a set of techniques, which promote soil life, make use of natural by-products of livestock farming and do not use chemicals or external inputs.

In an article in El País of 9 December 2023, researcher and farmer Marc Gràcia states that “(…) The results are obvious: less extension of soil is used, less is spent and more is produced”.

Agriculture and livestock farming are increasingly suffering the consequences of climate change in the form of droughts, stormy rains or unexpected frosts, many of whose problems stem originally from soil problems and unbalanced ecosystems, as well as from the application of herbicides and pesticides, or synthetic fertilisers, which promote nitrous oxide (N₂O₂) and greenhouse gases.

On the other hand, regenerative agriculture advocates direct seeding, ie, not tilling the soil to prevent soil erosion,

by favouring vegetation coverage, which avoids the release of carbon dioxide (CO₂), retains rainwater, regulates soil temperature and promotes biodiversity,

by grazing as a tool for pasture control and soil fertilisation,

and finally, by the generation of a microbiological community in living soil.

Regarding the latter, the essential help of beneficial soil micro-organisms ensures greater water infiltration and retention, making the soil more resilient to bad weather, while at the same time providing plants with nutrients and strengthening them against disease. In addition, the more organic matter present, the more carbon is retained in the soil and is no longer emitted into the atmosphere, thus also contributing to climate change mitigation.

These techniques reduce costs and increase yields year after year, making the soil more and more fertile.

However, the transition to regenerative agriculture often involves an initial drop in production in the first year, due to biological pest control, until the insects regulate each other through the food chain, and while the initially poor soil regenerates and forms the microorganisms in organic matter that will colonise it and work the miracle.

130 countries have signed up at COP28 in support of regenerative agriculture and its holistic and sustainable approach to food production, knowing that by adopting these principles we not only grow healthy crops, but also contribute to restoring ecosystems, mitigating climate change and building stronger and more resilient farming communities.

The transition to regenerative agriculture is not only an option, but an urgent necessity in building a sustainable and equitable future.

Cannabis is known to contain more than 120 different phytocannabinoids. These precious compounds are responsible for the therapeutic and psychoactive effects associated with our precious crops… Cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the best known and most studied phytocannabinoids. CBD has been linked to analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic properties, without producing significant psychoactive effects. While THC, our master of expansion, is mainly responsible for the psychoactive effects. Other phytocannabinoids such as cannabigerol (CBG), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and cannabivarin (CBV), among others, have also aroused interest in the scientific community due to their potential therapeutic properties.

Phytocannabinoids interact with the human body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological functions. As research continues, more benefits and applications in the field of medicine and health are expected to be discovered. In this article, we will outline the most relevant factors that influence the production of these sought-after by-products:

Genetics

Some strains have a naturally high production of phytocannabinoids, while others have a lower production. While many cannabis growers prefer strains with high THC levels, there are strains with medium levels but higher profiles in other phytocannabinoids that can offer maximum enjoyment without compromising the experience.

The light

Both light intensity and light quality have proven to be crucial factors affecting phytocannabinoid production. In general, a light intensity of at least 600-1000 µmol/m²/s is recommended during the flowering phase, for example.

Temperature and altitude

Ambient temperature and altitude can affect the profile and concentration of phytocannabinoids. Researchers and experienced growers have observed that a temperature in the range of 20-30°C can be beneficial; however, this can vary between genetics and growth stages.

As for altitude, a factor that cannot always be controlled, some researchers have observed that plants grown at higher altitudes may show a higher production of terpenes and an increase in the concentration of certain phytocannabinoids such as CBDA, CBCA and CBGA.

CO2 concentration

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most relevant factors. For example, there are reports where exposure to a CO2 concentration of 1,200 ppm significantly increased THC concentration.

Water availability

Water availability, irrigation frequency and controlled water stress can influence the production of phytocannabinoids. In general, to enhance their production, it is recommended to use water with a balanced pH between 6 and 7, so as to ensure optimal nutrient uptake and to avoid the presence of undesirable contaminants such as heavy metals, chlorine or pesticides. In any case, opt for filtered and dechlorinated water with low electrical conductivity. And very important: do not neglect proper irrigation!

Availability of nutrients

A constant supply of essential nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) are the key to producing quality flowers. The right amount and balance of these nutrients during the flowering phase can increase the production of phytocannabinoids.

In an experiment where cannabis plants were induced to be deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus, aerial vegetative fresh weights were reduced by 73% and 59%, respectively. This is an indication of the importance of optimal nutrition.

Of course, nutrition goes beyond just N-P-K, as is the case with synthetic fertilisers. While these macronutrients are vital, the organic world offers a diverse range of plant biostimulants, beneficial microorganisms, phytohormones, amino acids, etc. These elements not only complement the N-P-K, but also play a fundamental role in the nutrition of the plant, which, in turn, affects the aroma and taste of the flowers.

In the fascinating world of cannabis, understanding and harnessing these factors becomes the master key for growers who strive for perfection and consumers who crave excellence. Balancing these factors, and thus unleashing the full potential of the plants, is the shared secret among those who seek not only to grow, but also to experience the essence of cannabis…

Treatment of chronic pain with plants grown with BioTabs

We present the second testimonial signed by Ismael from “The Smurf Growers”, a patients’ collective dedicated to the therapeutic application of medicinal plant mother tinctures in the management of chronic pain. This group has chosen to use the BioTabs range in their crops. (The previous/ first testimonial can be found in this blog too).

“Greetings again!

It is almost a year since we started our journey with BioTabs products, and so far, we have not needed to renew the substrate. We have simply removed 2cm of the surface to get rid of the layer of salts that may have accumulated. We then added a new layer of fresh soil at the end of each growing cycle to further enrich the medium.

The soil microbiota is fully active, which is clearly reflected in our plants. They do not show any deficiencies and their roots colonise their environment quickly.

During flowering, when harvesting, we remove a small round root ball, leaving most of the roots in the soil. We then insert the new seedling into this small hole so that its roots quickly meet the life already established in the previous roots. In this way, they are quickly integrated into the microcosm of Trichoderma fungi, mycorrhizae, and other beneficial soil micro-organisms.

I would like to underline once again what I said before: the ease of growing with BioTabs is something that must be experienced to be fully appreciated. The savings in time and products are a reality, and the quality of the harvest is excellent.

As a group of medicinal patients, we pay special attention to the products we administer to the plants, as these will eventually reach our bodies through the vaporisers. Therefore, BioTabs represents an incredibly satisfying alternative for us. The plants acquire all their organoleptic potential, resulting in exceptional quality.

Tinctures are one of the applications where we most notice the unique potency and flavour of plants grown with BioTabs. In FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil) extraction as well, which is what most of the patients in our group use, because of its easy ingestion and fully controlled effects, and because it is sustained release. It relieves pain, muscle spasms and mental disturbances, providing a unique and prolonged feeling of wellbeing – we love FECO extraction!

What never ceases to amaze us is the foliar biostimulant Boom Boom Spray. The vitality and power that young seedlings gain, even without being stressed, is spectacular. We have also applied this product to the cuttings.

In short, we are delighted and want to share our experience through this humble contribution. We hope that many growers can benefit from this simple, intuitive, and extremely grateful way of growing. BioTabs is a gratifying proof of how unnecessary those products are (=synthetic chemicals) that damage the health of the soil and, therefore, our own health”.

In recent years, the world of fungi has experienced a remarkable boom in significance and studies. This revival of interest is due to several revealing factors.

Mycology

Mycology, the science devoted to their study, has advanced significantly. Scientists in the field are unlocking the secrets of fungi in a variety of new areas since the discovery of their crucial role in decomposing organic matter, recycling essential nutrients, and maintaining ecological balance.

Mycotherapy and Medicinal Fungi

Mycotherapy is a branch of natural medicine that uses the benefits of fungi to promote health and treat various conditions. As research in this field advances, amazing properties are being discovered in fungi that could have a significant impact on medicine and human health.

One of the most prominent fungi is Ganoderma lucidum, also known as Reishi. This fungus, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, has earned a reputation as an “immortality fungus” due to its potential beneficial health effects. It has been studied for its ability to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress, improve sleep quality and act as a potent antioxidant.

Another fungus that has aroused the interest of the scientific community is Cordyceps sinensis. This parasitic fungus, which grows on insects in the mountainous regions of Asia, has been used in traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine for centuries. Cordyceps extracts have been shown to have adaptogenic properties that can help the body cope with stress and increase physical endurance. Its potential to improve lung and cardiovascular function is also being investigated.

In addition to these examples, research is underway on other fungi with probable therapeutic benefits. Scientists are exploring how bioactive compounds in fungi can be used in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and infections.

Mycotherapy is not limited to the consumption of fungi as supplements only. The possibility of using fungi in the production of drugs, such as antibiotics and antiviral agents, is also being investigated. In addition, fungal-based immune therapies are being developed for the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases and allergies.

Mycorrhizae: The Underground Symphony

One of the most intriguing discoveries in the world of fungi is the role they play in the formation of mycorrhizae. These symbiotic associations between fungi and plant roots are essential for healthy ecosystems, as they help plants absorb water and nutrients from the soil in a far more efficient way.

Fungal Biodiversity

It is estimated that there are more than two million species of fungi on earth, of which only about 120,000 have been identified and described. This immense diversity offers a vast field of study and discovery for mycologists and scientists. Every year, new fungal species are discovered in remote and diverse locations, expanding our knowledge of global biodiversity.

Modern Mycophilia

Growing awareness of fungi has also given impetus to mycophilia, a term that refers to the love and interest in fungi. Fungi enthusiasts come together to forge connections, learn about wild fungi identification, and participate in collecting expeditions. This passionate community shares its knowledge and promotes the conservation of mycological ecosystems.

In short, the world of fungi is experiencing a boom in interest due to advances in mycology, the revelation of their importance in ecosystems, their medicinal potential, and the fascinating diversity of species yet to be discovered. This boom is contributing to a greater understanding and appreciation of these organisms that have long remained in the shadows but are now emerging as an inexhaustible source of knowledge and wonder in the natural world.

In a world increasingly concerned about the effects of climate change, hemp is emerging as a valuable resource in the search for sustainable solutions. While trees are widely known for their ability to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and thus mitigate global warming, this plant is emerging as a surprisingly effective contender in such a crucial task. As science delves deeper into its role as an ally in the fight against climate change, its potential to absorb significantly more CO2 than trees is revealed.

As we know, hemp is a versatile plant that has historically been used for a variety of purposes, from textiles and paper to food and medicines. However, its ability to capture CO2 from the air and convert it into organic matter makes it an invaluable asset in reducing greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.

Unlike trees, it has a shorter growth cycle, which means that it can be harvested and replanted at shorter intervals. This facilitates a faster and more continuous uptake of CO2. In addition, it is extremely hard and adaptable, able to thrive in a variety of climatic and soil conditions. Its abundant and deep root system contributes to improving soil structure and its ability to retain water, which in turn promotes the growth of other plants and the conservation of the surrounding ecosystem.

As its use in the production of bioplastics, textiles and sustainable building materials is promoted, a continued demand for the plant is being created. This, in turn, drives the planting and cultivation of more hemp, increasing the total amount of CO2 absorbed.

While trees will remain an essential part of any strategy to combat climate change, hemp offers an exciting and promising prospect. Its ability to absorb a greater amount of CO2 in a shorter period, combined with its versatility and ability to regenerate ecosystems, make it a valuable resource in the global fight for environmental sustainability.

As our generation continues to explore innovative ways to address climate change, we cannot underestimate the critical role that hemp plays in building a greener and more balanced future for generations to come.

A real-world example of how hemp has been used to absorb carbon dioxide and contribute to climate change mitigation can be found in the experience of the Hemp Earthship farm in Taos, New Mexico (USA). This farm, founded by Michael Reynolds, stands out for its innovative approach to sustainable building and environmental regeneration.

At Hemp Earthship Farm, hemp has been used as a building material to create structures called “Earthships”, which are self-sufficient, eco-friendly homes. Hemp is mixed with lime and other natural components to produce a building material known as “hempcrete”. This material is not only highly insulating and durable, but also acts as a carbon sink, as CO2 is absorbed during the hemp’s growth process and stored in the concrete structure.

As these hemp houses are built and their use in sustainable construction expands, a double impact on CO2 absorption is being achieved. Firstly, the hemp plant itself absorbs CO2 during its growth cycle, helping to reduce greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. Secondly, hemp used in construction becomes a long-term carbon storage material, further contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

As awareness of the benefits of hemp as a CO2 absorber continues to grow, we are likely to see more initiatives and innovations that harness this versatile plant to drive environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation around the world.
